Independence Day in the Philippines

Now don't get confused, the Philippines' Independence Day was last month. I'm talking about Our 4th of July. Usually for me, the 4th means barbeque, beers, and a care free day hopefully by the beach. Well turns out I don't live near a beach, so couldn't do that. But also turns out I could still celebrate the 4th American style. Of course, since this is Not the US, some things were... well... just a little different.

Four other PCVs came to stay at my house for the night. They came bearing gifts, pasalubong if you may, as typical when visiting someone. Kate was so kind to find red-white-and-blue spangled (terrifying mostly) outfits for all 5 of us, so we might celebrate the big day in STYLE and Class. Karey was dressed quite like a watermelon, and Jules looked like a farmer.

And speaking of my dear friend Karey, she came bearing an early birthday present for me. She is pictured below (the present, not Karey). Her name is Harriet Tubman and she was to be my new pet.

It seems that Karey had been quite psychic in buying me a pet chicken, since I love smelly, dirty, and ugly birds. And Harriet is Very ugly. She was half dead when Karey presented her to me inside the Jollibee, her crown purple and drooping from exhaustion and being stuck inside a plastic bag with her feet tied. I think I screamed when I found out she was still alive.

Back at my house, the 5 of us got comfortable and began the festivities. Meanwhile, Harriet was pooping all over my nipa hut. It was also a good time for the water to shut off. But we were too busy cooking bratwursts and doing picture-picture. In my head every once in a while, however, I was debating what I would possibly do with this dirty bird when my friends left the next day. I couldn't rightly eat her... could I? But she was far too sickly looking to keep as a pet, especially for a pet owner who had only ever cared for and killed goldfish.

Well we continued on in our fun, and Harriet joined us a little bit too. She wasn't so shy after all.

Next day, was I in for a surprise. Tethered outside after one too many accidents, Harriet had layed her first (and possibly only) egg!! I was a grandma! Or.. at least I had breakfast! I decided I had to keep her.

Harriet is currently residing with Tita Cheryl A., who has proven to be a better pet-taker than Jessica. Jessica visits Harriet irregularly. Harriet has yet to lay another egg.
